(90) Al-Balad

This Surath is named Al-Balad (the City) from its first verse, which says: “Nay! I do swear by this City.” It was revealed in the early period of the Messenger’s Meccan life. The Surath clearly explains the aim of deputing mankind to the earth and the means to reach their destiny by passing through the steep path. It warns of the consequences for disbelievers who are not ready to accept that way – the Straightpath – and who are leading their lives aimlessly and heedlessly, as if none is seeing, none is observing, and there is no need to answer anyone about this worldly life. It is also mentioned that the companions of the right hand live by giving preference to Adhikr and the Hereafter over this worldly life. This Surath, containing 20 verses, ends by warning that the companions of the left hand will be covered with the Fire.
