(89) Al-Fajr
This Surath is named Al-Fajr (the Dawn) from the first verse, which says, “By the breaking dawn.” This Surath was revealed during the early period of the Messenger’s Meccan life. By mentioning various phenomena in the universe, this Surath commands mankind to learn lessons from them. By pointing out the evil consequences faced by different defiant peoples who arrogantly prided themselves on the earth — such as the people of Aad, the people of Thamud, Pharaoh, and others — this Surath commands mankind to take heed and abstain from engaging in mischievous activities. This verse warns that the disbelievers who do not utilize Adhikr after receiving it — which explains the aim of life — will wail on the Day of Judgment when Hell is brought near: “How good it would have been if I had utilized Dhikra! I have wasted my lifetime in vain!” This Surath, which contains 30 verses, concludes by giving Glad Tidings to the tranquil soul who serves the Lord by propagating Adhikr, that it will be told in the Hereafter: “You return to My Paradise.”
