(88) Al-Ghashiya

This Surath got the name Al-Ghashiya (Overshadowing Event) from the first verse, which asks, “Have you received the Speech of the Overshadowing Event?” This Surath was revealed in the early period of the Messenger’s Meccan life. It explains the severe punishment that the disbelievers—who received Adhikr but did not utilise It—must suffer in the Hereafter, and it also explains the enjoyments that the believers who utilised It will receive in Paradise. This Surath demands that mankind identify the Superior Creator Who created and fashioned the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth, etc. This Surath, containing 26 verses, ends by stating that the duty of the Messenger and the believers is only to warn and remind mankind with Adhikr, whereas reckoning is the duty of the Lord Allah.
