(80) Abasa

This Surah got the name “ĘżAbasa—He Frowned—from the first verse, which says “he frowned, he turned.” It was revealed in the early period of the Messenger’s Meccan life. While the Messenger was speaking to a leader of the Meccan pagans, a blind man named Abdullah ibn Ummu Makthoom entered. The Messenger then frowned and turned away from Ummu Makthoom, expressing resentment.

It is told in this Surah that Adhikr—which is the Ticket to Paradise—is brought to the earth by noble and virtuous Angels, and that whoever hides It has been killed. This Surah reminds mankind to become aimful in life by observing the creation of man, his death, his sustenance, and how it reaches him through different stages. This Surah, containing 42 verses, ends by warning that on the Day of Judgement, the Fujjar—whose faces will be covered with misery—will flee from his mother, father, brother, and son; and on that Day, everyone will have his own affairs to think about.
