With the name of Allah, the Impartial, the Compassionate.
(49) Al-Hujurath
This Surath, containing 18 verses, got the name ‘Al-Hujurath’ (the Sleeping Rooms) from the fourth verse, which says that ‘those who are calling you from behind the sleeping Rooms, most of them are not utilizing their intelligence’. This was revealed during the Messenger’s Medina life at different times, especially in the last period. Being part of teaching the manner, character, and mode of conduct the believers should have, this Surath teaches that if any transgressor brings any news, the believers—who are endeared with belief and heedfulness, and are having hatred towards disbelief, transgression, and disobedience—should respond to it only after inquiring about it seriously. The believing men and women are brothers and sisters to each other, and if any two of them happen to quarrel with each other, the believers should try to make reconciliation between them under the Light of Adhikr.
The verse of this Surath says that all mankind are the sons and daughters of a single father and mother, and they are separated into different nations and tribes to identify each other. This Surath prohibits ridiculing others, calling by double names, saying stinging, defamatory, and slandering words, doing spy work, spreading guesses and conjecture, etc., which cause interruption to the harmony of mankind and disintegration aimed at getting supremacy and superiority over others. This Surath ends by reminding that those who show their belief as a favor upon the Messenger and believers are not the true believers, and their life, which is against Adhikr, is hypocrisy, which is just like teaching the Three-Time Knower Allah their life.
