Then We gave him glad tidings with a forbearing son.
The “forbearing son” is Ismael. Ibrahim had no children, as his wife Sara was barren. His first child, Ismael, was born to Hajara, who was gifted by the ruler of Egypt. Hajara and her son were brought to Mecca and settled there by Allah’s command. At that time, Mecca was an uninhabited place. The prayer Ibrahim made from there is recorded in verse 14: 37: “Our Lord! I have settled some of my offspring in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House; our Lord, so that they may establish prayer, so You make the hearts of the people incline towards them and provide them with fruits so that they may be grateful.” When their water ran out, Hajara ran to and fro between Safa and Marwa seeking water, as explained in verse 2: 158. It is mentioned in verse 9: 114 that Ibrahim was among the repeatedly repenting and forbearing. See explanation 51: 29.
