(36) Yaaseen

With the name of Allah, the Impartial, the Compassionate.

(36) Yaaseen

The name of this Surath is taken from the first verse, ‘Yaaseen,’ which means ‘Oh Man.’ It contains 83 verses and was revealed during the latter part of the Messenger’s time in Mecca. This Surath is also called the “Heart of the Book.” The Lord has taught through His Messenger that this Surath should be recited to those who are near death. This Wise Book was revealed to warn heedless people whose forefathers were not warned. It warns that the word of punishment applies to most disbelievers, so they will never believe. Only those who follow Adhikr and fear the Impartial Lord unseen can be reminded of Adhikr. It also warns that all the deeds—good or bad—performed by each individual during their lifetime, as well as the legacy they leave behind, are being recorded in a Book.

By mentioning a country to which three Messengers were sent, but whose people rejected both the Messengers and the Message they were sent with, the All-Knowing Lord reminds the Messenger and the believers that this has been the approach of people towards all Messengers throughout history. A believer, who lived far away from his people, heard the news of the arrival of three Messengers and came to them, urging them to follow the Messengers who asked for no reward and were themselves guided. The arrogant people killed him. By recounting the consequence of killing this believer, the Lord warns people until the Last Day that the consequence of killing a believer will be very severe. By pointing out the creation of pairs in the plants growing from the earth, from themselves, and from the creatures they do not know, as well as in the fixed movement of the sun and the moon, and the taming of livestock for mankind’s use, Lord Allah wants mankind to acknowledge His Oneness. By reminding them of life in the grave, resurrection, and the Day of Judgment, the Lord commands mankind to live a life with purpose. This Surath ends by glorifying the Lord who has kingship over the heavens, the earth, and everything in between, including mankind, and warns that everyone will return to Him.
