(111) Al-Masad

With the name of Allah, the Impartial, the Compassionate.

(111) Al-Masad

This Surah got the name “Al-Masad (the Date-Palm Fibre)” from the fifth verse, which says, “In her neck, there will be a rope of Date-Palm Fibre.” Being in advance of starting public propagation, the Messenger ascended Safa hill one morning and gathered the Quraishi chiefs by announcing loudly, “Oh morning of danger!” He asked them, “Would you believe me if I told you that an army is assembled behind this hill to attack you?” They replied, “About you, who is known as the honest, we have never heard you telling a lie.” The Messenger then said, “Then you live approving that there is no Deity except Allah; otherwise, I warn you about a punishment that will affect you.” Hearing this, before anyone else could speak, Abu Lahab, who became annoyed, said, “Have you gathered us for saying this? May you perish!” It was then that this Surah, containing five verses, was revealed. Among the enemies of the Messenger Muhammad and Islam, the name of his paternal uncle and closest neighbor, Abu Lahab, is the only one mentioned in the Lord’s Book. This Surah teaches that regardless of wealth, status, or closeness to the Messenger or believers, those who harbor hatred toward Adhikr will face disgrace and severe punishment in this world and in the Hereafter.
