And you know that indeed, anything obtained as booty of war; then indeed, for Lord Allah is one-fifth of it and for the Messenger and the relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the stranded travelers if you have believed with Lord Allah and with which We sent upon Our servant on the day of Criterion when the two forces met, and Allah is capable upon everything.
It is told in verse 8: 1, Booty of war is from the Lord and it is for Him and His Messenger. Spoils of war (booty) are denoted as ‘Ghaneemath’ in this verse only. The aim of wars is not gathering booty, but it is an optional gain from the war. The rules and regulations for sharing the booty are described in this verse. In the earlier period, the laws regarding the welfare tax mentioned in verse 9: 60 was not revealed. So, the share of the booty for Lord and His Messenger should be utilized for the needy, orphans, etc. mentioned in this verse. The meaning of “What We sent upon Our servant” is the supernatural help from Lord upon the Messenger and believers on the day of Bad’r.
Today, there is no battle or booty of war since there is no group of believers. The odd-believer is commanded to do Jihad against the hypocrites and disbelievers with Adhikr—the Strong Weapon—as told in verse 25: 52. He should spend all the bounties and wealth bestowed by Lord for propagating Adhikr into entire mankind aiming to annihilate bloodshed, killing, terrorism and all such mischievous activities and thereby forming the harmony of mankind. By doing so he is helping the Lord so that Lord will help him back as told in verses 22: 40 and 47: 7. See explanation3: 161-163; 8: 13 and 9: 31-32.
